This is how a New Yorker Grocery Shop

In case you were ever wondering how does a New Yorker, Manhattanite grocery shops around town. Here is how!

This morning, I had a short list of grocery items that I need to pick up so I made a grocery store run. Since we live in the neighborhood of Upper West Side Manhattan, there are many supermarkets within short walking distance.

Living in Manhattan, man of us do not drive to grocery stores, there is no parking lot, we walk to the grocery store.  We (at least me) usually bring re-useable bags to the grocery store and carry the bags home. The typical grocery store for us is about 5-7 minutes walk, so it really is convenient.
(Here is a photo of me trying to snap my own photo while walking with a grocery bag).

We don't usually buy bulk since it may be hard to carry them. But for us city folks, it is quite a good exercise to keep us in shape. Occasionally, we will go to the grocery store that is out of town with a car so we can buy bulk when needed and drop off at our apartment in the city.

I like your hat in that picture, very colourful, you could pass as a Canadian. I guess walking everywhere would be an excellent source of exersize Eileen, very handy indeed.

Eileen - Manhattan is definitely WAY different that Scottsdale, AZ!  I only buy in bulk - but then again, I drive to the grocery, and I don't have a walk-up apartment/condo....then again, I'd probably be in better shape if I lived in Manhattan...!

Eileen, I never thought of that before. It's true, no parking so you can't buy in bulk...but great for exercise!

With four kids I would be making MANY trips to the corner grocery store.

Eileen.. I have wondered about grocery shopping in Manhattan and kind of figured it had to be done in short little trips.. So different from Long Island where the closest grocery store is at least 2 miles... Happy Day...

Brings back memories of how we used to shop in Washington Heights when I was growing up.

Eileen, that is exactly why you are in such great shape!    I hate shopping, go when I run out of most everything and have MANY bags.    Luckily I can use my car!

Eileen,

I love it - walking from the supermarket is very healthy, plus one tends to buy what he or she needs instead of filling up the cart with too much extra... g

Eileen that is one thing I miss, living in a community where I can walk to the store.

I hope you have enough supplies just in case the storm is really bad.  Stay safe.

Truthfully....I hate supermarkets. I go to farmer's markets, produce stores and a fish market...I buy paper and cleaning products in bulk at Sam's.
