Born in Taiwan, Republic of China and family moved here in 1990, now I am an assimilated Chinese American and able to speak both Mandarin Chinese and English and work as a Real Estate Agent.
When we first move to New York, we settled in Queens, New York. Queens is the largest in area, the second-largest in population, and the most East in Geography of the Five Boroughs which form New York City. Five boroughs consist of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Staten Island and Queens.
As of 2007 according to Queens County census breau, Queens has 20% of Asian American population, largest compare to any other borough in New York city.
Growing up my mother has always tell me to embrace my heritage and do not forget how to speak Chinese, as an young adult, I did not know the difference nor the importance. As a youngester, I wanted to forget how to speak Chinese so I can learn English quickly and start mingling with the kids in School. Some of my classes were ESL classes, (for those of you not know what ESL is, ESL stands for English as Second Language class, where all the non-English mother tongue speaking kids are group in the same class to learn).
It was tough growing up not able to talk to other students and be in the IN crowd. I felt a bit like an outsider, therefore I have always strive to do better in classes and earn better grades, I think part of that 'needing to do good' carry onto my business.
Now with all the Chinese and oversea buyers that myself and my team service. I appreciate that my mother reenforcement on me continuing the Chinese language while I was learning English in American school. Being a Chinese Mandarin Speaking Real Estate Agent in New York, I have been reaping the benefits of being biligual, and working with many sellers and buyers who also share the same culture heritage. I have been servicing oversea investors that speaks Chinese and connecting sellers who would like to sell their property to oversea investors using my language and culture connection.

Best wishes for continued success. We have a large Chinese population in the suburbs of Washington DC. Sometimes, we have to use a bilingual daughter to help with the translation.
Hi Eileen,
Being bilingual will serve you well. Network with your colleagues and they will pass business to you. We have a bilingual agent in our office from Montreal Quebec who does very well with French Canadian clients. I had an agent from Toronto call me to give me a referral but I didn't speak enough French so passed them to my colleague. She got a nice big paycheque and I got some gift certificates to Starbucks lol.
Eileen, you seem to be a positive, assertive woman who will be successful in anything you do. BTW, there are many Chinese who speak Mandarin purchasing property in Surprise.
Thanks for sharing your story with us today. Another great NY story. Thanks
Let's connect for Staten Island buyers. I love referrals.
Roy - You are right, most of the Chinese family if they just migrate to US, they rely on children to do the translation since the kids go to English speaking school.
Jenny - We do large amount of referral to other agents that speaks Chinese to other parts of US. We also receive tons of the referrals from other parts of the world/US as well to assist Chinese buyers in purchasing Manhattan Real Estate.
Leolina - I am surprised to hear there is a Chinese community in your part of the town! That is great!
Harry - HELLO! Thank you for stopping by!
Kenneth - Yes, we can certainly build on a referral system. We work both Chinese and non-Chinese speaking buyers. We have a team of great agents ready to close some buyers and sellers!
That is great! I always wished I could speak two languages, not only for business..but also for fun.
Best wishes!
Sincerely,
Kathleen
Great background Eileen and I love how you took your strength of your Chinese culture and carved out a niche for yourself in Real Estate. Great confidence on your part. It is a very good talent to be able to speak two languages.
Hi, Eileen, I do the same to my 2 girls, they can both speak Cantonese, they are both born here. Chinese is the first language I taught them, and they really appreciate that they are bilingual. I think it is always an advantage being a bilingual, it brings upon much more opportunities to us.
Hi Eileen ! I love your consistency with your posts ! I'll bet you get some great google position for Chinese clients - great dedication !And hope all is going well !
Cheers !
Sheldon
Eileen, Your mother was very wise not to forget your original language; being bilingual is wonderful. I am sorry I didn't have my children take lessons in another language when they were young, the easiest time to learn.
Gary, you are right, I am lucky that I carved out a niche for myself! THANKS!
Rita! YES, having your children to speak bilingual does provide them with more opportunities!
Sheldon!!! CONSISTENCY is the KEY! I hope you are doing fabulous!!!!
Carole, Yes, mom was very wise, I am glad even though I was eager to learn English, I hang on to my Chinese language!
Eileen - All the power to you and you should be very proud of your accomplishments, I wish I spoke more languages!
VB
Eileen - I love your story and love to know you better.
As for me, I'm Malaysian Chinese although I can't "really" speak Mandarin. Neither can I speak proper Cantonese. I could make do and get by but I cant read and write. When I was younger, my grandparents and parents insisted that I learnt Chinese. I never was keen about learning it. Wish I had done what you did.
I could speak, read and write Malaysian - which is similar to Indonesian because that was my national language. I wished I could read/ write Chinese so that I could be of service of sole Chinese speaking clients.
Robert - It is never too late to learn a new language!
Loreena - Yes, I am forever grateful that my mother and grandparents always asked me to not forget how to Chinese language. I have to admit, throughout the years I have forgot some proper ways to speak. But, believe me, when my Chinese followings for business come calling, I picked up the language quickly! Now, I think I speak better Chinese than I did fiver years ago. Can you believe it?
I can not even begin to imagine how difficult it is to go to school and not be able to communicate with the kids. You are great!!!
