Proper (eating) Etiquettes with Asian Clients

As a multilingual team, we focus large portion of business working with Asian and/or Chinese buyers. When we are working with Asian buyers or sellers, we are very aware of different etiquette when it comes to conduct business and also socially when we are out entertaining them.

Here are some tips when it comes to dining with Asian clients:

- If you are invited to eat dinner or lunch, and you arrive to the table early, always allow others to sit first before you select your seat. Especially if there are other elderly around, you must always let the eldest or the host sit down first before you can sit yourself to show respect.

- When a pot of tea arrive at the table, it is ideal to always try to serve the tea to others. The order of pouring tea is always the eldest person first then then you pour around the table. Pour the tea to yourself last. The tea should be pour up to 80% of the cup, not overspill the cup.

- When a plate of food arrive at the table, wait for the eldest or host to start on the dish first before you start picking on the food, even if host trys to be polite and ask you to start, you should always wait for others to start first.

- If the plate of food you would like to have is far and away from your side of the table, try your best not to reach over the table over others to get to the food. Maybe wait until everyone is eating the food in their own plate to try to serve yourself that dish.

- If you eat with chopstick, try your best to always keep two chopsticks together, not separate them and use them to pull or rip open the food, that is very impolite. Never use chopsticks to point at anyone. At the same time, if you have to set the chopsticks down, DO NOT stick the chopsticks into the food in your bowl. Set them on top of your bowl on either side of the bowl. When in doubt, just use knife and forks.

Enjoy your meal, now that you can impress your clients! Below are some more helpful posts:
